Canggu Creative Weekly # 3 | The Age Of The Podcast

The media everyone thought had died in "The Blitz” is back with a bang.

Last week, the man at the top of the Podcast hierarchy did what would have been unthinkable when his first radio show aired 11 years ago.

Nothing complex - just the transcendental thrills and spills that can only come from #RealTalk - The Joe Rogan Experience has been rewarded for its position as the unrivalled Podcast, with Joe recently penning a $100 Million deal with Spotify.

Traditional media is lame.

False, even.

The arbiter of truth without a single concrete fact to merit its position as the cornerstone of reality.

Gil Scott Heron may have warned us that the revolution would not be televised.

But he never said it couldn’t be transmitted through the radio.

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone can start a podcast.

Sure, the bare-bones barrier to entry is a mic, laptop and internet.

But ask anyone who has taken on the mammoth task of starting one, it turns out it’s more complicated than just recording that “Podcast-worthy“ conversation.

That said, there are so many voices out there that are demanding to be heard, and there has never been a more conducive time in history to host your own radio show.

Here are some of the creative people who have recently been bringing their voices to the world at Genesis Creative Centre.

When you have the idea to begin a podcast, one thing is absolutely crucial.

Just. Have. Fun.

When we first met Steph, her charisma, energy and vivacious disposition was apparent from the very first meeting.

A perfect cocktail for a Podcast host.

Not Lost… Just In Bali has a global relevance.

A natural affinity with people means the space she provides is wide open to explore the variety of topics her engaged guests want to bring to the conversation.

Even the topic of “Kink” is on (and sometimes under) the table.

But treating taboo as the new normal is exactly where her platform and listenability excels.

Still in the humble beginnings, but with a podcast 5 episodes strong, she is already getting encouraging feed back from an increasing listenership, with ever more potential guests wanting to sit down with the radio hostess with the mostest.

Indeed, the show’s title tips the cap to those who stayed in Bali when there was no means of escape, and just got down to business.

Steph proves that “Not Being Lost” is the perfect moment to discover yourself, in a new medium, in the new dawn.

Justin’s journey towards the world of podcasts could not have been rockier.

His first breaths were taken in a climate of chaos.

Christened in the Church of Criminality, Debauchery and Thuggery, his maladjustment to society saw him expelled from 7 schools before the age of 14.

Yet, there’s no better sharpener of street smarts than an education at the University of Hard Knocks.

By 21, he started a Concreting Company, which brought professional and business success.

But this was all an illusion. A disguise for the demons that still cursed his physical, emotional and spiritual well being.

Not even cement can pave over cracks of the soul.

Checking into a recovery program, he learned the tools and practices that would help him strip back the armour and rebuild himself, brick by brick.

Half a decade later, his purpose could not be more precise:

Spread love - Help people in recovering their heart, health and happiness.

His story alone is enough to want to hear more.

But the mission is the inspiration.

The tools and practices he has learned are replicable.

And there is no better example, no better promoter, propagator and pioneer - of the cosmic benefits of unconditional self love.

As intense a story as Justin’s is, it’s only just beginning…

Justin’s Podcast is going to be launched in conjunction with his website in the next fortnight.

Stay tuned.

One of crucial aspect many neglect when starting their podcasts is marketing.

Not Jamie.

The rugged, enigmatic Scottish contingent of travel blogging couple Wander In Two, Jamie’s Wee Podcast has been able to get far more attention from its host since the onset of the largest disrupter to tourism since The Great Flood.

We were proud to have played a role in the launch of his Podcast venture, which now sits at a healthy 14 episodes.

Jamie’s Wee Podcast is a conversational tonic for the ears.

Served with a slice of travel, a healthy dose of mental health talk, with a few unadulterated tangents thrown in for good measure - it’s all whisked together with his good old fashioned Scottish humour.

Starting with a well established platform, and getting your podcast across as many platforms as possible, is key to getting your voice heard amongst the airwaves.

Indeed, he’s got all the ingredients needed to follow in the footsteps of the man he looks to emulate.

Persistence is key in the Podcast game.

The Joe Rogan Experience may be the one we all hold as the pinnacle of success.

But we must remember that Joe couldn’t even fathom where he would be today when he sat down for Episode 1.

The $100 Million podcast dream just didn’t exist back then.

A dedicated following who cares what you have to say is reason enough to start, and reason enough to carry on.

It’s in Troubling Times when the people who have something to say need to stand up, mic up, and be counted.

Indeed, this is the only formula Joe ever followed.
